Welcome to our surgery which is situated midway between Truro, Falmouth and Redruth. We are a dispensing practice offering care to approximately 6090 patients from a single modern site which is located on the outskirts of the village.

Dr Cook trained and qualified as a doctor in Cardiff in 1995. His GP training continued in South Wales (including 18 months spent working in New Zealand) and was completed in 2000.  He came to Cornwall in 2001 and joined this practice in 2009 and then became a partner in 2010. He has been involved for many years in local NHS development and management but is now back fully here at the surgery as Senior Partner.  He is married with children and enjoys the challenge of his new hobby of marine aquariums.

Dr Embling joined the practice in January 2014 and trained in London at St George's Hospital Medical School. She subsequently moved to Plymouth where she trained and qualified as a GP in 2003. She worked in Devon as a GP and as a part-time Staff Grade Psychiatrist in Plymouth until the birth of her daughter in 2009 when she relocated to Cornwall. She is married with two children, she also has a border terrier who she loves taking for long walks in the Cornish outdoors.

Dr Teff trained at St George's in London, studying on the postgraduate programme, and qualified as a doctor in 2004, when he started work in Plymouth. He moved from there to Truro and completed his GP training at Bodriggy Surgery in Hayle in 2009. Dr Teff joined our practice at the start of 2014. He is married and has two children, who seem to take up most of his time. With his free time he enjoys reading, pottering around in the garden and following Liverpool Football Club.

Dr Cuff trained at Peninsula Medical School studying in Plymouth and Exeter, and qualified as a doctor in 2011. He started work in Treliske Hospital in 2011 before starting GP training in Cornwall. He completed his GP training at Fowey River Practice in 2016, staying on as a GP before moving to Carnon Downs. Dr Cuff joined the practice at the start of April 2017, he is married and has a young family who keep him very busy. With his free time he enjoys sailing, being outdoors and cooking, whilst keeping an eye on the cricket .

Dr Heaton-Renshaw studied at Newcastle University before moving to Cornwall in 2010. She spent a year working in New Zealand as a doctor before settling back in Cornwall to complete her GP training. She lives with her husband, mother, three young children and 3 dogs on a smallholding where they enjoy keeping pigs, sheep and chickens as well as growing lots of flowers and vegetables.

Dr Fjelle  studied at  Cardiff University qualifying in 2009 and went on to continue her training across South Wales before moving to Cornwall in 2018.  After starting a family she has been working locally as a GP for the last 4 years and more recently has also been working in the Sunrise Centre at Treliske.  When she is not busy with the family she likes to go cold water swimming, running trails or picking up a paint brush and getting crafty.

Dr Davey trained at Bristol University, studying on the postgraduate programme, and qualified as a doctor in 2015. She then moved back home to Cornwall and started work in Truro completing GP training in 2023 at our PCN partner surgery at St Agnes.  She has covered locum shifts here at Carnon Downs and also has just completed maternity cover at another of our PCN surgeries at Chacewater.  She lives with partner and young daughter and spends her free time completing and training her dressage horse.

Dr Snow studied at Sheffield University qualifying in 2016. Since then, she has worked in hospital medicine in Sheffield, Cornwall and Scotland before returning to Cornwall in 2022 to start her GP training. She lives with her husband and daughter. She enjoys swimming, surfing and walking the coast path. 

Dave White

Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Specialist Paramedic)

Dave qualified in 2012 from University of Plymouth and has worked with the local ambulance service on the front line.  He also has worked in the Ambulance Service education since 2021 and is now currently working towards Specialist and Advanced Practice.

He joined the Coastal Primary Care Network in November 2021 working at Perranporth Surgery and here at Carnon Downs.  He also continues to work as part of a Specialist Paramedic Team for the ambulance service and some local Out of Hours clinical cover.

Dave enjoys the great outdoors especially walking and mountain biking - he is recently engaged and has a wedding planned for 2024. 

The paramedics are on duty all day Monday, Thursday, Friday and Tuesday morning. They work alongside our Emergency Duty Doctor by providing a clinical assessment via the telephone for patients unplanned urgent health needs.  They can also:

  • Assess, diagnose and monitor complex health conditions
  • Visiting the housebound if they are unwell
  • Carrying out tests to assist with diagnosis
  • Performing thorough examinations
  • Carrying out emergency care if needed
  • Helping patients learn how to manage their own health

Sarah Truen is the Lead Nurse here at Carnon Downs Surgery. She qualified in 2002 at Southampton University and spent a year working there in the Cardiac High Dependency Unit. Sarah moved back to Cornwall in 2005 having travelled throughout various countries including being an Au Pair in the USA. Since moving back she has worked at Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske on various wards and the last four years have been spent working on the Coronary Care Unit. She also gained a BSC Honours Degree in Healthcare at Plymouth University. Sarah is married with two young children and loves to spend time outside getting lots of fresh air.

Megan Jackson joined the practice in 2023 and qualified in 2009 through Plymouth University at the Knowledge Spa. She started working in Community Hospitals and in 2012 got her first Practice Nurse role where she has continued to develop her skills and gain years of experience during which time she completed her BSC in Health Studies. She is married with tow young children and enjoys beach days, getting outdoors and bike rides when the sun shines.

Georgina is our Nursing Associate and started work here in May 2014. She works closely with the nursing team, looking after our patients who need blood tests and our INR clinics, dressings and patients with long term health conditions. Claire joined us in March 2018 as our new Healthcare Assistant. She started in healthcare at the young age of 16 and worked her way up to a Senior Carer. Claire then started working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital as a Healthcare Assistant and then moved to the Phlebotomy department for two years before joining our nursing team here.

Sarah McCammon is our Practice Manager for the surgery, joining the team in Nov 2022.

Sarah has worked in Social Care and Education settings over the last 15 years most recently as the Head of People Resourcing and Development for a large care company. Sarah lives local to the practice in Scorrier with her family and enjoys coastal walking and spending time with her children.

Alison is our Assistant Practice Manager and joined the Practice in 1998.

Alison joined started as the Evening Receptionist and then qualified and became one of the Dispensary Team for many years. She has been in the role of Asst. Manager for many years here at the surgery and she looks after the whole Admin.Team, I.T. and our general day to day operations within the practice. She is usually found in the Reception area as she is responsible for all the duties involved with helping run the Reception Team alongside her Head Receptionist Julie with Tracy and Leanne the Senior Receptionists. Alison also looks after every clinic and all the appointments for the surgery. With such a large team and with each clinician having special requests or needs, juggling room availability, equipment, holidays and meetings, managing the rotas is a massive task which she thoroughly enjoys. She hopes you are enjoying the new look website and please feel free to let her know if there is something missing.

Nicola, Sophie and Gemma deal with all of the referrals and secretarial duties for the GP'. 

If you have any queries regarding your referral you can contact them each day from 9am until 4.00pm or go online direct to the department you have been referred to.

Nicola has been with the surgery for over 20 years and has a vast experience in General Practice helping run the secretarial department and look after all our correspondence and summarising of new patient records. Sophie completed Apprenticeship in February 2018 and has joined the administration team on a permanent basis helping Nicola with the increasing secretarial workload. She also won Cornwall Apprentice of the Year Award for Health and Social Care at the end of 2017 so we are very pleased Sophie decided to accept our offer of a permanent position. Gemma joined us in 2021 after working for 9 years at another surgery. She joined us to cover some maternity leave but has now been offered a permanent role within our team which she also accepted.

Julie qualified at Cardiff UHW 1984 as a basic grade physio she worked in Yorkshire, then Kent working with the spastic’s society at a secondary school.

After moving back to her home city of Bristol she worked for several years at Southmead hospital where she developed her love for treating MSk then studying at post graduate courses in London with the MACP.  This allowed her to climb the ranks where she eventually achieved post of Supt. Physiotherapist Outpatients running a busy department.  Developing her skills over the years including Biomechanics and gait analysis, peripheral and spinal mobilisation, cranio-sacral therapy and sports injuries.

Working alongside an Orthopaedic Consultant she was one of the first Physiotherapist Clinical Assistants assessing Orthopaedic outpatient referrals and injecting joints under supervision.  After moving to Worcestershire as Supt Physio in Outpatients she continued her role as Clinical Assistant here and at that time fundholding was established and one of her roles was to set up in-house physiotherapy within a GP Surgery.  During this time she commenced her own Private Practice and after getting married she then moved back to the South West living on Exmoor working within GP surgeries as a private practitioner.

Having 3 children she worked part time and moving to Cornwall 2011, she took some time out to settle her family.  Recently re-registering with HCPC she completed the "Return to Practice" programme working at Truro Health Park Lander Surgery in the Physio department and recently started during the summer here at Carnon Downs.  Julie adds “It's great to be back practising my profession within a familiar setting treating MSk conditions again”

Doris is a senior physiotherapist with over 35 years of experience and she loves being a physio! Over all these years, she has never stopped developing her skills and knowledge.

During her professional time as a Physiotherapist, Doris became interested in a more holistic view of the body’s function and its anatomy, and  studied Osteopathy and alternative approaches to help patients with their pain and physical problems. For a better understanding of the use and effect of medication, she studied to become an independent prescriber and joint injection therapist. Doris’ excitement about working with people and their needs and problems increased with a better understanding of the problem and a higher range of therapy techniques.

She loves wild swimming during the year and scuba diving. Living in Cornwall gives her the joy to live and work where people come for holidays.

The role of the Care Coordinator is to enable individuals to remain independent in the community and prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

There are a number of ways in which the Care Coordinator can support you including; remaining independent in your own home by ensuring that you have the appropriate level of care, support and equipment in respect to your needs. If you are experiencing any difficulties or concerns about maintaining your independence in the community then please make contact for further information.  The Care Coordinators are here to help you. Their aim is to ensure you feel supported and have access to the services that are right for you.

If you are living with a medical condition and require some additional support – whatever it is – we are here to help.  Equally, if you are a carer for somebody else, we are available to help both you, and the person you care for.  Finding the right support can be a difficult and daunting task. We can help you find the right path to follow by providing information on local services.

John, Ruchika and Clare are our Musculoskeletal (MSK) Practitioners and are based on the North Coast at either Perranporth or St Agnes surgery.

They all have extensive expertise in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of MSK (muscle or joint) conditions.

They see patients, aged 16 and over, with (suspected or diagnosed) MSK conditions, as the first point of contact, without need for a GP referral.

‘Musculoskeletal conditions’ is a broad term, encompassing around 200 different conditions affecting the muscles, joints and bones.

These conditions are a big problem in the UK; with over 17 million people living with a musculoskeletal condition, more people suffer with disability from musculoskeletal conditions than anything else.

Good health of bones, joints and muscles underpins living life well. Musculoskeletal conditions affect nearly everyone at some point in their life. They can cause pain, fatigue, restricted mobility and activities of daily living. They impact people’s lives, their work and even people’s other health conditions.

Conditions of the bones, joints and muscles represent a significant cost to the individual, the economy and health and social care.

The receptionist will book a telephone appointment with one of the team if your condition is suitable for their assessment without you having to wait to speak with a GP first.

CRITERIA INCLUDED:

  • All soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains or sports injuries

  • Arthritis - any joint

  • Possible problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons or bone eg tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ankle sprains

  • Spinal pain including lower back pain, mid-back pain and neck pain

  • Spinal related pain in arms or legs, including nerve symptoms, eg pins and needles or numbness

  • Changes to walking

  • Post-orthopaedic surgery

CRITERIA EXCLUDED:

  • Acutely unwell patients

  • Children under 16 years of age

  • Medical management of rheumatoid conditions

  • Women’s health, antenatal and post natal problems

  • House-bound patients

  • Medication Reviews

  • Neurological and respiratory conditions

  • Headaches

  • Acute mental health crises

  • Patient who would prefer NOT to see a FCP

Dr Embling studied at St George’s Hospital, London and joined the practice in 2012 and became a partner in 2014. Her special interests are in Women’s health and Psychiatry and she is the GP Trainer for the practice.

She is married to a hospital consultant and they have two young children, they all enjoy the great cornish outdoors whilst Dr Embling loves to run by the coast. She also loves a good book and good food including a spot of baking when time allows.

What do you enjoy the most about the PCN?

Working with other like-minded motivated colleagues to try to improve the working lives of our teams whilst improving the care of our patients.

Dr White graduated from Kingston Poly with first-class honours in bio-analytical science and biochemistry and qualified at the University College Hospitals and Middlesex School of Medicine. He joined the practice as a partner in 2004 and is the GP Trainer for St Agnes Surgery and the CCG Representative for the practice.

He is married with four children and enjoys the cornish countryside when he is out cycling or running outdoors. He also has a love f of classic cars.

What do you enjoy the most about the PCN?

Dr Shaw studied in Liverpool and joined the practice in 2004 and has been a partner for the past 17 years. He is also the GP lead for CQC, Care Home lead and Adult Safeguarding along with looking after the HR for the practice. He also specialises in joint and soft tissue injections.

Tony is married (to a Chacewater GP) and has three children. He is a keen runner, an obsessive pianist and a wood stacker!

What do you most enjoy about the PCN?

Mixing with colleagues from other practices and knowing that the standards of care we are offering have and will continue to improve.

Dr Hamad studied at Oxford and Cambridge. She joined the practice in 2011 having been a GP trainee there. She has been a partner since April 2021. She is a GP trainer, Training Programme Director for the Cornwall GP training Scheme and also a GP Appraiser.

Noor is married to another GP and has 2 children. In her spare time Noor enjoys surfing, kite surfing and playing guitar.

Sarah joined Carnon Downs Surgery in November 2022 and has a background in strategic management in the Social Care sector and Education related programmes. 

She is committed to supporting the development of staff and services to ensure the best care is provided for the people we support. Achieving a degree originally for a career in teaching she has shifted her focus to social care with Diplomas in Leadership and Management and Information, Advice and Guidance.

She moved to Cornwall in 2016 with her family including 4 grown up children, two of which are now living away in London and Australia. In her down time Sarah enjoys relaxing at home and in the garden or long walks along the coastline.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

Looking forward to the opportunity for collaborative working and sharing best practice to improve access and care for our patients.

Tracey joined the surgery in 2006 and became the Practice Manager in 2019. She is married with one daughter who is off to university in September. She has a lively springer spaniel, 2 cats and loves spending time with her family, reading and walking.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

The ability to work with other team members which give us the ability to improve our own services by working collaboratively.

Neil joined the Chacewater & Devoran Surgeries as Practice Manager in December 2020. Prior to taking up his current position Neil was the Practice Manager at the Mullion & Constantine Group Practice on the Lizard for 18 years. 

Neil enjoyed a career in the Royal Army Medical Corps before taking on practice management he is married with 2 adult children (and one granddaughter ) and enjoys playing golf ( badly ). 

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

Coastal Primary Care Network ( PCN ) provides the structure for health care services to be developed locally in response to the needs of the patient, and the provision of the highest medical care within the practices.

Lucy has enjoyed working at Perranporth Surgery since 2004, starting in administration/dispensary before becoming Practice Manager in the Autumn of 2023.  Lucy is married, with two grown up children and enjoys walking the family’s two dogs across Cornwall’s beautiful beaches coastline..

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

I enjoy the support and collaborative way of working that we have achieved with our neighbouring practices. I want to continue to work together to improve services to our patients and wider community.

Lilian is new mum enjoys watching Rugby with her husband. She also enjoys spending time walking the countryside with her Collie, Meg and showing her horses.

David joined the PCN in November 2021 and is currently studying Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Practice currently at University of West England. He specialises in Unscheduled/urgent care and obstetric emergencies. He enjoys the outdoors so is often found on a cliff path, he’s a little bit of an adrenaline junkie mainly fulfilled by mountain biking however he has been known to jump from planes and fly down zip wires. David also enjoys skiing when he has the chance to go.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

Being new to the PCN I am enjoying the challenge of a new area of clinical practice for myself, learning from the team as well as sharing my knowledge and experience from other areas.

Sophy has worked in Hampshire for the last ten years in various roles including: Paramedic, Enhanced Paramedic and then as a Specialist Paramedic on rotation: in a rapid response vehicle, in hospitals, 111 clinician, the urgent care desk or with the falls and frailty car. She then worked as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner with an Urgent Community Response Team while maintaining a bank contract with the ambulance service. She enjoys stand up paddle boarding, swimming and baking.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

I am excited to be back in Cornwall and am looking forward to being part of the team at St Agnes and the wider PCN. I want to build on my existing skills and develop new ones in order to be an effective team member and serve the community.

Tarna Morrison

Tarna joined the PCN in September 2022. She studied her dietetic degree at Plymouth University in 2010. She has worked within a number of healthcare trusts and across a wide range of specialities. More latterly she specialised in diabetes and gastroenterology. 

Before training to be a Dietitian, she worked as a dental nurse and radiographer. She also travelled around Australia, South America and parts of Asia. Tarna has two children, and enjoys family bike rides, dog walking, kayaking and cooking.  

What do you enjoy the most about the PCN?

She is looking forward to integrating within a dynamic PCN and designing a dietetic service that supports the needs of the local community.

Mental Health Practitioner

Tiff joined the PCN in January 2024 and qualified at Plymouth University with a BSc in Mental Health Nursing.

She has a wealth of knowledge having worked in several mental health services and community services throughout Cornwall. Originally completing Degrees in Social Science and Youth and Community Work, she has worked as a Community Psychiatric Nurse, within the Community Mental Health Team and The Early Intervention Psychosis Team here in Cornwall, she has also worked within the local community homelessness service and substances use services.

Tiff continues to be passionate about prompting independence and creating better access to services in Cornwall.

Tiff moved to Cornwall from Staffordshire over 20 years ago and lives for the outdoors, trail running, mountain biking and walks on the beach.

She has one 11-year-old daughter who lives for Netball!... and her phone!

Tiff loves travelling and being outdoors, sport enthusiast, watching or playing and loves a board game, slightly competitive.

The variety of work I do and the different people I meet, working as part of a multidisciplined team that works holistically to support our local communities towards better health and well being

Sarah Joined this PCN in 2024 and qualified at the University of Southampton in 2009 with a BN Hons in mental health nursing. Sarah completed diplomas in CBT and DBT  at the University of Reading.  Before this PCN Sarah worked within other PCN’s around Cornwall.

Sarah moved to Cornwall in 2021 and before this was based in Berkshire working in various community mental health teams, crisis teams and in old age mental health teams. Sarah was a Clinical lead in a CMHT for many years before moving to Cornwall.

Sarah has a passion for improving mental health services within primary care, Sarah piloted a primary care mental health service in Berkshire and this went on to be a great success.

Sarah has stuck to her promises of learning to surf……still learning! Loves the outdoors and sea swimming.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

I enjoy bridging the gap between primary mental health and secondary mental health services. Working alongside many professions all aiming for the improved outcomes of patients.

Ellie joined the PCN in September 2022 having worked in Health and Wellbeing for the past 4 years at the Cornish Mental Health Charity, Pentreath – Ellie can help with short term interventions for mental wellbeing.

Having worked on a number of different projects the support participants in the community, and recently completing her NVQ Level 4 in information, advice and guidance Ellie is extremely  passionate about supporting people to overcome the barriers they are facing day to day in order to improve their mental and physical health.

Ellie enjoys sunny days spent at the beach, completing chunks of the south west coast path, and discovering tasty vegetarian recipes.

What do you enjoy most about the PCN?

Being part of a team of people that are able to work together and offer a wide variety of support to the community in order to improve their health.

Jane has worked in the NHS for 20 years and has vast knowledge of patient care and services within general practice. Jane joined the Coastal PCN in April 2022 as a Care Co-Ordinator, she previously worked at St Agnes Surgery as a receptionist.

 Jane enjoys time with her family, holidays abroad and walking in Cornwall, in particular the walk from Penzance to Mousehole and she can often be found on the Camel Trail. Or eating a crab sandwich in the Rockpool Cafe in Mousehole.

Natasha has worked for the NHS in General Practice over the last 17 years. Most recently at a practice in St Austell area as a dispenser and GP admin support. Hannah enjoys meeting and learning about all walks of life and incorporating the beautiful scenes of Cornwall and it’s community into her daily life.
